Job Description
Draws blood from patients in hospital, or similar facility for analysis or other medical purposes by performing the following duties.
Responsibilities
- Draws blood from patient
- May Prick finger and heel to draw blood
- Assembles equipment such as tourniquet, needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton and alcohol according to requirements for specified tests or procedures
- Verifies identity of patient with 2 identifiers
- Converses with patient to allay fear of procedure
- Applies tourniquet to arm
- Locates accessible vein
- Swabs puncture area with antiseptic
- Inserts needle into vein to draw blood into collection tube
- Withdraws needle, applies treatment to puncture site
- Performs Breath Alcohol Testing
- Performs drug screen collection
- Examines patient’s driver’s license when drug testing
- Adds bluing to the commode when drug testing
- Asks patient to empty pockets except for wallet when drug testing
- Instructs patient to collect 45-602ml of urine in the container and to return container to them when completed
- Completes collector’s information on drug screen form
- Applies gloves and checks temperature of urine
- Transfers urine into specimen bottle and labels
- Removes and discards gloves and washes hands
- Instructs patient to complete donor information on drug screen form
- Adds specimen and completed drug screen form into specimen bag and seals in presence of patient
- Gives donor a copy of drug screen form
- Checks the specimen container, face sheet and path/cyto requisition for patient ID
- Specimen maintenance
- Completes path/cyto with patient information, pre and post diagnosis, type of specimen, physician, etc.
- Makes sure a registration label is on the specimen and each page of the path/cyto requisition
- Checks to see if the specimen has been ordered in MEDHOST by Surgery or Lab and updated by Lab
- Places a MEDHOST label on the specimen and each copy of the path/cyto requisition, the path/cyto log and the sheet of paper for LabCorp
- Completes the path/cyto log book
- Places a pink copy of the path/cyto requisition in the correct lab file
- Places the specimen, requisition and face sheet in the bio-hazard bag and places the bag in the cooler for pickup
- Takes the remaining MEDHOST labels to the mail so the Tech’s can release the specimen in the MEDHOST system
- Gives pre and post instructions to patients, families and residents
- Provides procedure instructions to new hires, students and staff
- Verifies medical necessity is met when placing all orders
- Acquires additional diagnosis codes when needed
- Enters orders into MEDHOST
- Processes LabCorp and Quest reports
Requirements
- Phlebotomy certificate; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. High School Diploma or GED required.
